Clinical Study of Pefloxacin in Orthopaedic Field

Abstract
Pefloxacin, a new generation of quinolones, is of interest for their broad spectra of antibacterial action, their good distribution volume and their excellent bioavailability.
These properties suggest the possibility of the use of this agent for the treatment of infection in orthopedic field.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pefloxacin in the treatment of orthopedic infection, a clinical trial was performed in 20 pts, i,e, 3 cases with acute osteomyelitis, 8 cases with chronic osteomyelitis, 3 cases with post-op. infection, 3 cases with secondary infection and 3 cases with open contaminated fracture.
The results were as follows
1. In 20 patients with orthopaedic infection, the result were excellent and good in 19 patients(95%).
2. In bacteriologic eradication, 8 cases out of 9 cases of Staph. aureus, 5 cases out of 7 cases of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, all 3 cases of Enterococcus were eradicated, but 1 case of Staph. mercescens was persistent.
Thus total eradication rate was 80%.
3. During treatment, 4 patients showed adverse reactions, i, e, 2 cases of G-I trouble, 1 case of vertigo, 1 case of photosensitivy, but these adverse reactions were not severe enough to stop the treatment.
There were no deleterious effect on peripheral blood count, liver & renal function.
The results demonstrated that the Pefloxacin is an effective and safe antibiotics in the treatment of orthopaedic infection.
